This article is in no way shape or form a ringing endorsement of Darwin's theory of evolution, nor is it an endorsement of the religious belief of creationism; because the truth regarding these two ideological perspectives may very well reside somewhere in the middle.
Nevertheless, as we navigate through our daily lives on this planet, it has become excruciatingly evident that the social, psychological and spiritual growth of human beings has more or less ceased, and a kind of human regression is taking place within humanity.
According to the American Heritage dictionary evolution is defined as; "A gradual process in which something changes into a more complex or better form".
Conversely then, if evolution is defined as a process of changing for the better, then the process of de-evolution can surely be defined as a regression in mental, social and spiritual growth.
Considering the upsurge in acts of individualism and materialism coupled with a sense of self preservation by any means necessary within American society, it is not far fetched then to conclude that the process of evolution, i.e., (human beings changing for the better within the construct of humanity), has just about ceased and in many ways taken a reverse direction.
In a recent poll conducted by CNN; the conclusion arrived at was that most American children do not see cheating as a moral issue, and in fact, feel that cheating is completely normal. In addition, many experts have likewise concluded that the extremely high percentage of amoral behavior in American children is directly connected to the lack of a coherent and consistent moral message from their parents, teachers and other alleged adults in the lives of these children.
Moreover, many individuals who relish in the title of adulthood, i.e. (being grown up) have likewise taken on the persona of individualism and materialism coupled with a sense of self preservation, by any means necessary, .i.e., (complete self absorption). This highly contaminated way of thinking by many adults without a doubt compounds the problem; because it remains wholly impossible to teach morality without actually comprehending the components of a moral mind-set, and the very notion of a moral compass oneself.
Unfortunately, a sense of genuine human togetherness, common courtesy or simply striving to be a decent human being while making a positive contribution to society is slowly becoming a lost art.
Case and point:
The day after Thanksgiving has been designated as the biggest shopping day of the year, and many department stores boast of huge consumer savings.
Well, on November 28, 2008 as a Walmart store in Valley Stream, New York opened its doors for business, more than 2,000 people rushed the doors and subsequently trampled, crushed and killed an employee who was serving as the store greeter.
As this person lay there on the floor bleeding from being crushed by 2,000 crazed shoppers, no one stopped to offer any kind of assistance, and in fact, people proceeded to simply step over the body in a mad dash to collect the items they wanted.
Furthermore, several school districts within the state of California have felt compelled to contact the website YouTube because of thousands of girl fight video's that were being uploaded to its website. For those of you who haven't heard of the girl fight phenomenon; high school girls across the nation are engaging in brutal acts of hand to hand combat simply for the pleasure of doing so, and are uploading these "girl fight" video's onto YouTube for their so-called 15 minutes of fame.
In addition, the same fore mentioned website has seen an increased number of video's on how to cheat and get away with it. The young adults who are uploading these video's range in ages from as young as 16 to 27 years old, and many of these individuals have gone on the record citing that uploading these video's on how to cheat onto the Internet is a form of public service. How ludicrously detached from reality is that?
One has to wonder, if the rapid growth and dissemination of technological devices has desensitized us all, and has had a bitter sweet impact on our society; and has therefore created a downward spiral in compassion within humanity.
The absence of a moral comprehension by many within American society has patently taken on a life of its own and has manifested itself in frighteningly unevolved acts of inhumanity as articulated above.
Let us be assured, that as the elders of our communities, children and families, that it is essential that we not only demonstrate a socially and spiritually evolved temperament to our youth, but that we also remain firmly embedded in a moral mind-set, and are therefore able to insist that our children remain accountable for their character and their actions without the watered-down compromises in morality which many 21st century parents, teachers and elders have learned to adhere too.
